2024 Training Log Part 17

On the stereo- Kavinsky. On my mind after the Olympics closing ceremony.

A tough but instructive week as I upped my conditioning. It’ll be another week before I adapt, so I think it’s going to be more of the same this week.

Monday

Sparring, first score, 45 minutes. Awful, 1 out of 5 session. For a variety of reasons somewhat out of my control my diet and sleep had been dreadful over the weekend and I felt it. Got my ass handed to me by everyone. Gave up point after point. Felt fatigued.

Tuesday

Upper Body Strength. Not much to say about this session except that it happened, and is in the books. Clock punched.

  1. Floor Press- w/u 3@100kg
  2. Staggered Stance Single Arm Cable Row- 4×5
  3. Pec Deck 2xmax
  4. Bench row- 3×12
  5. Seated Power cleans 3×10
  6. Core circuit

NoGi sparring- 4×4 minute rounds. A quick squeeze in session before coaching. I focused on movement to try and get out of the rut from the previous night.

Wednesday

Sparring 6×6 minute rounds. Standing start. I did 3 with an ultra and 3 with light weights. For the Ultra I tried to start on top (failed on 3 out of 3 attempts). For the lights, I pulled (1 success). I didn’t spot the mistake in the pulls on the fly but caught it after the session.

I’d say 2 out of 5. But happy to have spotted an error.

Thursday

Heavy conditioning in the gym. Thoughts and prayers etc.

  1. Bike 10 mins. 140bpm pace
  2. 15 minutes of- a) Flat Bench x10, b) Single arm row x8, 8, c) Weighted Lunge x8, 8
  3. Bike 10 mins. 140bpm pace
  4. 15 minutes of- a) Alternating Dumbbell Incline Press x12, b) double k-bell bench row x10, c) Goblet Squat x10
  5. Bike 5 mins cool down.

Survived it. And it was so damn hot in the gym I felt sorry for anyone training near me. I intend to drop down about 3kgs in the next few weeks without significant calorie restriction and to up my pace on the mat. All this without irritating my back, hence the seated/lying variations in exercise selection.

Friday

5k walk. Ice cream.

Saturday

10 out of 11 rounds. Another 2 out of 5 session. I gassed about 5 rounds in. In general, I start very slowly in training and take about 3 to get up to speed. My best rounds in a session like this are 5-8. Well, I started slow, continued slow, and then slowed down.

There’s always next week.

Training Thoughts of the Week

You can’t outrun a bad lifestyle. I had beer and crap food for 2 days last weekend, not my usual life, and it ran into the week. And you can’t get that back. You can’t train through it. You just have to take your licks and get through it.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

Time and Energy. Those are the two most valuable human resources. When you run a business and have family it’s what it’s all about. Does X cost time? Does Y cost energy? How much? Is it worth it to spend time or energy on them?

I don’t have Whatsapp notifications turned on from Thursday 6pm until Monday morning 8am. You’d be surprised how many people believe that because they’ve messaged you, you are under obligation to text back immediately and on their schedule. The worst fuckers are the ones who send a message, and then send a “?” 20 minutes later. I’m not on demand.

Okay, back to the grindstone tonight!

See you on the mat,

Barry
