This morning on the stereo: Rolling Stones- Let it Bleed.
It’s December. I’ll tell you something funny about my Jiu Jitsu training. I give up on the winter. It’s not that I don’t train, I just don’t get enough consistent training for whatever reasons. Part of it is having limited training partners. A lot of the people I train with drift off during the winter months with work and what have you. Another part of it is that during the winter, I’m sore now. My hands in particular give me a lot of shit when it’s damp. So I spend a lot of the time frustrated that I can’t train consistently.
So I just give up on progress and take sessions as they come. Take last week. 1 Jiu Jitsu session all week. Ì ran an event last week, and you can be sure that after any event, I’ll get sick. So it went. I got to the gym to lift on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but only trained on Wednesday night.
Monday
Sick. Boo Hoo.
Tuesday
Upper Body
BFRs on. Vibe low.
- Single arm Bench 5×5
- Decline Bench 3×15
- Dumbbell Supported row 4×5
- Face Pull 3×15
- Swiss Ball Plank 3x60s
- Tricep pushdowns 2×20
- Preacher curls 3×10
I didn’t push the boat out too far on this. Call it a 2 out of 5.
Wednesday
Jiu Jitsu Sparring. I think I did 9x5min rounds. Good partners, big lumps in the room. 4/5.
Thursday
Was going to be busy all day Friday so combined 2 sessions into a general show and go session.
- Bench 5×8
- Floor Press 1×30 4×15
- T-Bar Row 3×20
- High Pull 3×10
- Leg Press 1×30, 4×15
- Supported Pistols 4×5
- Quad extension 1×30, 4×15
Wobbled out the door of the gym on shaky legs. Good session.
Wanted to train Saturday but my throat was killing me. Opted to take a good 3 day break and train Monday.
Training Thoughts of the Week
You’ve probably heard me talk about the stress bucket before. It goes like this- you’ve got a capacity for stress. Work, family, any other worries, they all go into the bucket. Then you add training, because training is stress on the body. It’s enjoyable stress, but stress nonetheless. Have a busy work week, and the bucket is more full. You can’t put any more stress into that bucket or it will overflow. That’s when you get injured, sick, or just feel miserable.
That was me this past week. Too much stress from work, not enough rest, and of course, once you look back on your diet and sleep, you’ll find that you skipped meals, or filled gaps with crap.
Non-Training Thoughts of the Week
I voted for a change last weekend. We got the same old shit.
See you on the mat,
Barry
