2025 Training Log Part 28

On the stereo today- Rumours- Fleetwood Mac. My mate always said “best album of all time” about this one. To which I replied “Pet Sounds!”, and then, “Fleetwood Mac is your Da’s music”. But now I’m a full on Dad, I really appreciate this might be among the best ever.

I had a good week of training last week.

Monday

Gi positionals and rounds. Positionals were dreadful. Rounds were decent.

I have to tell you that I’m a bad driller, so positionals are my best way of learning and refining. When they don’t go well I get miffed at myself.

Tuesday

NoGi training. Another crazy busy Tuesday, so getting on the mat required a caffeine gel pack for a boost. That said, I didn’t train too badly despite being really fatigued. Positional finishing was back control, mount, and side control. Then we did 3×5 from seated guard. Not bad considering I was a solid 2 out of 5 on the energy scale when I stepped on the mat.

Wednesday

Lifting in the morning-

  1. Floor press w/u 3@100kg
  2. Close grip bench push ups 3×20
  3. Face Pull 5×12
  4. Single arm row 4×8
  5. Ab mat weighted crunches 3×15
  6. Band pushdowns 3×20
  7. Cable Hammer Curl 3×15

Evening Jiu Jitsu- I think I did 6x5min rounds, but I forget, because they were forgettable. I did notice my pace was up slightly, so it might be time to attach my HRM to see what sort of work I’m doing.

Friday

Show and Go session in the weight room.

  1. A- Single Arm Bench 5×10 B- Single Cable Pull 5×15
  2. Reverse grip face pull 5×12
  3. Foot Elevated Push Up 3×20
  4. Plank 3x60s
  5. Concentration Curl 3×20
  6. Single arm pushdown 5×10

Saturday

NoGi Competition training.
Sprints and relays for warm up, bit of craic. Especially when my team won.

Business end was 40 minutes of finishing work. Back, mount, side control. Game only over when there’s a tap or an escape. Followed that with 5x6min rounds. The pace was really high, and I gassed towards the end of the last 2, giving up a sub and a top mount. I know the lads are younger, but I need to work on my output a little in the next few weeks.

Training Thoughts of the Week

As per the last paragraph. I felt my conditioning wasn’t where it needs to be for the first time in a long time. I’ve been working hard the past few weeks outside of training, and I haven’t been able to hit the gym like I’d like. I’m also in camp for the first time in a long time, so I will be swapping out my show day for a go day from this Friday onwards.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

I had a great reaction to the podcast I did with Drysdale, which got released last week. It’s interesting, the listenership is growing, but I’m not doing anything to grow it except doing things I’m interested in. The editor contacted me about it, and initially he did ask me to do some things for rapid growth, but he stopped trying after a while when I kept saying no. I strongly believe that if you keep doing the things that you really love and believe in, then you will find like-minded people. To court popularity, likes, follows, comments, well that’s the road to hell for me.

See you on the mat!

Barry
