2025 Training Log Part 30

On the stereo today- Everything must Go- Manic Street Preachers

Busy week. Quite happy with how it went.

Monday

Got robbed of a strength session by an “emergency” meeting I needed to get on. It was, of course, not an emergency.

Evening Jiu Jitsu. Positionals and about 4 rounds. Tried to keep my pace high. Nice session.

Tuesday

NoGi training. 40 minutes of first score. I focused on being relaxed with my entries and keeping framing distance. Got some decent stuff going with my leg for counter-pummelling . Pretty happy with it.

Wednesday

In the morning with Roger D. Just timer on and 5 min rounds. Last 2 rounds we went first to 2 scores but up to that, we just trained. I think 7 rounds all in all. I put some attention into avoiding chest to chest at all costs. I’ve been allowing that through lazy habit.

Evening jiu Jitsu in the Gi. I think this may have been my hottest session ever in Ireland. The thermometer hit 28 inside during the session, with the humidity at 89% when everyone was in. Still, very nice to move around with everyone.

Thursday

Lower body in the gym.

  1. Front Squat 5×5. Max was 70kgs.
  2. Nordic curls 4×8
  3. Machine quad raise 3×15
  4. Lying ham curl 15, 12, 10
  5. 3 way bridge- Front/Side/Side x3minx3
  6. Hip pop ups 3×15

Home and hosed. In lower body I try to go to a point where there’s no DOMS the next day. Which of course is like trying to judge the weather for the next day. I got this one right.

Friday

Show and Go session in the weight room.

  1. Floor press 5×10
  2. Dumbbell Supported Row 5×8
  3. Close grip neutral push ups 3×20
  4. Bridging 3x3min
  5. Bent over raise 4×10
  6. Concentration curls 3×15
  7. Seated “preacher” hammer curls 3×10

Saturday

NoGi Competition training.
Warm up/conditioning. Calisthenics/sprints

First score 30 mins from opponent flat on back. Rounds from standing 4x6min. Got some of my angle work going and scored 5 or 6 nice takedowns that I’ve been working on. Missed about 5 other entries, and 1 of them got me counter thrown. Last round, I got whooped by TJ which brought me back to earth nicely.

Training Thoughts of the Week

Ever hear of metatarsalgia? No, me neither until last week. I got a pain in the pad of my foot I thought must have been a splinter on Monday evening. Then later it felt more general. Then by Wednesday I couldn’t put my foot on the ground without pain. It’s inflammation of the joints in the foot. It doesn’t effect me during training rounds at all, but the second we finish I can’t put it on the ground again.

Getting older- every week you discover a new part of your body that can hurt.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

A few weeks ago, I put in a new rule that you had to wear spats (leggings) to NoGi training from now on. The goal was to reduce skin-borne infections like staph and ringworm. Everyone has taken to it pretty well. Although some people aren’t fond of training in them that much, everyone understands why.

I think ringworm used to come up once every 2 years in gyms when I started out. Now we’ve a flare up every year, and from talking to other coaches, it seems to be every gym. What’s causing it? My guess would be that there is obviously more people doing Jiu Jitsu, but that there’s also way more crossover between gyms with people training together. In any case, it’s irritating, but I hear that spats seem to help in other places, so here’s hoping!

See you on the mat!

Barry
