2025 Training Log Part 33

On the stereo today- Disintegration- The Cure

Best album of the 80s? Change my mind kids!

Last week was a busy week as I changed up my training ever so slightly. Had a bit of a back strain that kept me from doing too much, but the conservative approach is something I’m mastering.

Monday

Busy working day, and then just a few light rounds in the evening to get a sweat on.

Tuesday

NoGi training. Some retention work and then some guard passing first score for 40 minutes. I felt a bit stiff after the previous Saturday, but I got a little looser as the session went on. Tried to not wrestle up much and just play from the back to keep my neck in shape. We finished with 3x5min rounds.

Wednesday

Upper body strength work

  1. Decline Press 5×8
  2. Med Ball squeeze press 3×15
  3. Prone row 3×10
  4. Wobble Board plank 3x1min
  5. Curls 3×15
  6. Pushdowns 3×12

15mins sauna

Evening Jiu Jitsu. Just some fun in the gi playing guard for the most part.

Thursday

3km run. Like a fool. My knee has been sore so I don’t know why I did this except that I was keeping up with my kid and her friend on their scooters. Moron.

Friday

Show and Go session in the weight room.

  1. Bike 5min
  2. 30/30 C2 rows. Max output interval work.
  3. Dumbbell press with iso hold 3×20
  4. Kneeling face pull 3×15
  5. Weighted leg raises 3×10
  6. Preacher curls 3×12
  7. Single arm pushdowns 3×10

Good session. The first effort on the row was 158m. I remember the days when I’d be pushing for 180m on those efforts. I’d say that day is gone but I’d like to be hitting 175 on the first effort in a few weeks.

Saturday

NoGi Competition training.

30mins first score from the back. Everyone was quite small so I set up to retain with movement and not to come up without perfect execution. Then 5x5min rounds to finish up.

Training Thoughts of the Week

I put a lot into my diet this week in terms of recovery and session planning. The week before I had been so busy with work that I didn’t get my calories in pre-training. It really showed on the mat in some sessions. This week was so much better on that front.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

My work is really varied and interesting because I get to spend time with a lot of different people. That means the best times are when it’s really busy. It’s when you have the most fun, have the most challenges, and get the best atmosphere. However, it’s really easy to burn out on that. I tell my kids coaches “Never be enthusiastic- be ordinary!”. I’ve worked with some great teachers or coaches over the years who were only brilliant in bursts, and for every period of great training, there was a corresponding dip in enthusiasm and application for weeks at a time. So I’ve learned to hold myself back, even when I’m loving it, and that in turn helps me to push myself on when I’m not.

See you on the mat!

Barry
