2025 Training Log Part 26

On the stereo today- Grand Prix- Teenage Fanclub

Busy weeks at the gym as we prepare to launch a new venture, run summer camps, and start some gym renovations. Not a lot of time for training last week, but that will clear up in the next while, and I’m signed up for the European NoGi Championships in late October now, so back on the bike.

Wednesday

5 minute rounds x7. Enjoyable enough, although I didn’t really warm up much and felt a bit stiff until midway through.

Friday

Mixed Conditioning session

  1. Single arm bench w/u to 35kgx8
  2. Med Ball throws x20
  3. Stagger push ups 3×20
  4. Chins 4×5
  5. Overhead Tri extensions 5×15
  6. Squat Preachers 3×12

Saturday

NoGi Competition training.
15min Master Kimura Warm Up
Positionals: 25 mins first score.
Rounds: 5×5

26 degrees on the mat. I felt amazing during, like everything was lubricated and moving sweetly. Of course the rounds were really tough, but the feeling of not having any tightness is great. Only warm weather can do that to you, or a very long warm up!

Rounds were tricky. I’ve been training predominantly in the Gi lately so I do feel a little behind in the scrambles, but that will come in time.

Training Thoughts of the Week

Upping the intensity has to be done with care and attention. There’s a wonderful term- adaptive energy. You only have so much of it. You can either use it for your Jiu Jitsu, or your conditioning, or your strength, but not all at the same time. For the next few weeks my goal will be to get tighter in NoGi once again, at the expense of gym work.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

When you run your own business, you have to find that work/life balance. There is no cut off time unless it’s self imposed, so you need to be very careful that work doesn’t creep into your life at home or elsewhere. I’ve improved at this over the years. I am “on” most of the time. And then when I’m “off”, I don’t even think about work. But that does take effort. At the moment I’m really busy and I keep thinking that if I just answer this text or send this email it will make tomorrow easier. I have to stop myself all of the time or I would always be “on”.

See you on the mat!

Barry
