2024 Training Log Part 30

On the stereo today: Gillian Welch- Time (The Revelator)

Mixed week last week. I’m very busy with a few projects so getting time to train is a challenge, but I somehow squeezed in a few sessions.

Monday

Strength Session- BFR bands

  1. Dumbbell floor press 1×30, 4×15
  2. Seated T-Bar row 3×15
  3. Single arm machine press 2xmax
  4. Kettlebell Bench row 3×10
  5. Core work, I forget what I did.
  6. Pushdowns 3×20
  7. Standing curls 2×20

Then a few rounds that night. My rib was still a bit dinged up from Lisbon, so I just rolled a couple with some of the very light people.

Tuesday

3k run. Yeah yeah I know I know. I don’t run and I’m actually supposed to avoid it with my back injury, but my daughter scoots to school when I don’t have to go straight to work, so guess what, I have to run.

Wednesday

Sparring. 10×5 minute rounds. Rib was still tender so didn’t push the boat out too far, but put some focus on retention and movement.

Thursday

3k run. I actually don’t know why I haven’t been recording these in the past. They happen 2-3 times a week. I also walk my dog every day so I should probably count those too.

Friday

4 hours of drumming. No that’s a lie. I was present for 4 hours in a rehearsal studio, but I did not drum for 4 hours straight. Probably more like 1 hour altogether.

Show and Go Session

  1. Single arm bench w/u to 5 at 35kg
  2. Pec deck 2xmax
  3. Kettlebell high pull 3×12
  4. Face pulls 3×15
  5. Wobble Board Plank 3x60s
  6. Superset a) Spider Curls 2×12 b) EZ curl 2×20
  7. Superset a) Pushdowns 2×20 b) Cable kickbacks 2×20

I do my Fridays as fast as possible. Looking up at that it looks like I’m there for 2 hours but from warm up to walkout this took 45 minutes.

Saturday

Rounds… I think I did 10. Might have been 9. Not sure. 1pm to 2pm anyway. Good session, the rib felt perfect so I’m happy enough. Turns out it was my back that was tight. A bit of foam rolling and some work on the massage ball and I was good to go.

Enjoyed that.

Training Thoughts of the Week

I was asked where I get the time to train so much. Well, first, I work at this, so it’s easy for me to be on the mat. But I think people are really talking about the strength work I do.

I have a couple of advantages that others don’t. My days are unstructured. I can work mostly when I want, and aside from meetings, I have great flexibility during the daytimes. This means I use the gym off-peak, which means sessions can be faster. “Gym people” annoy me, so this is good too.

But the big advantage I have is that I really want to do this. Most people don’t really like to train. They like the idea, but they don’t really like training. I find it dull sometimes too, but I still really want to do it. I like the results, I like the feeling afterwards, and I sometimes like the during. If you don’t like it, you probably won’t find the time for it. But if you do, you’ll find it somehow.

Non-Training Thoughts of the Week

Whatsapp is great isn’t it? I think so anyway. It’s a great communication tool. I use it for business, for family, for my interests. But I turn off the notifications frequently and I don’t feel any need to attach the phone to my arm. I don’t want to be beholden to a phone, and sending me a message should not entitle you to an immediate response. If someone is in the room with me, they’re first. I had to codify it into my whatsapp status. “My notifications are off so don’t expect an instant reply”.

People don’t like it! They think it’s ignorant or something!

Okay, surely you have something better to be doing. No? Fair enough.

See you on the mat,

Barry
