On the Stereo today- A podcast from college. I’m multitasking
Ah what a disaster of a week! No training whatsoever to record as I was down with a virus for the week. Not the man flu this time, a real virus. Felt a bit of scratchy throat on Monday evening so decided not to train, got worse on Tuesday, by Wednesday I was confined to the bed and the couch. I only started to feel slightly human again on Saturday, which was a good thing because most of the other coaches were also sick at that stage.
I’ve nothing upcoming, so it’s fine to be ill. But I do remember when being sick felt like I was missing out on training, and I’d be behind when I came back to training. Of course that’s not the case, but you couldn’t convince me of that years ago. I had to be on the mat every second it was open!
Training Thoughts of the Week
No training doesn’t mean no Training Thoughts! On Saturday I held a special training session for the lads, going through some methods of self-improvement for more advanced trainers. It’s interesting to me to watch people develop. From Purple belt onwards, for me it was just about hours and hours of sparring, and then being really intentional about what I wanted to do in the next week. So as someone going from Intermediate to Advanced, it looked like this for me-
- Sparring- maybe between 15 and 30 rounds per week.
- Coming up against a problem- maybe Under/Over passing
- Going and watching a video on technique when your opponent is doing that position
- The next week, running that technique with someone for a few reps, then running it live
- Eventually discovering the issue was earlier in the movement (not allowing grips for example)
And so on and so on. It was rare to have a specific guidance on anything.
Non-Training Thoughts of the Week
It’s not easy doing nothing, but the worst thing about being a Masters Athlete (as I like to call myself instead of saying Middle Aged) is that when you do nothing, all of your old injuries come back. It should be the other way around right? But movement is lubricating to your joints, and when you don’t have it, they seize up like old car parts.
Anyway back in the gym this morning, and then back on the mat tonight for some rounds with the lads.
See you on the mat,
Barry
